This year, Prof. Nicoletta Colombo, Italy, will be presented with the ESGO Lifetime Achievement Award in tribute to her outstanding career dedicated to the improvement of health and well-being of women with gynaecological cancers, through a lifetime commitment to prevention, excellence in care, high quality research, education and leadership in the field of gynaecological oncology in Europe.
The award will be presented during the Presidential and Awards session at the ESGO 2023 Congress.
In 2019, the ESGO Council initiated the biennial Lifetime Achievement Award for an outstanding contribution in the treatment of women with gynaecological cancers.
The first Lifetime Achievement Award was assigned at the ESGO 2019 Congress in Athens to recognise a European specialist and international collaborator, who contributed significantly to the improvement of treatment and care of women with gynaecological cancers, through a lifetime commitment to clinical research and/or education.
Prof. Vergote and Prof. Ayhan were presented with the first ESGO Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019, and Prof. Andreas du Bois was presented with the Award in 2021 at the ESGO Congress in Prague.
About Prof. Colombo
Prof. Nicoletta Colombo graduated in Medicine in 1980; she completed the Specialty in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1984 from the University of Milan, Italy.
After a training period at Charing Cross Hospital and Royal Marsden Hospital in London, she became clinical research associate at the Kaplan Cancer Center , New York University, where she worked from 1984 until 1986. Junior and later Senior Faculty at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Milan from 1986 to 1994, in September 1994 she became Deputy Director and in July 2001 Director of the Gynecologic Oncology Unit, Division of Gynecology, European Institute of Oncology, Milan, Italy.
Since October 1, 2002 she is Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Milan-Bicocca. Author of several publications in the field of gynecologic oncology, she is member of various professional societies such as the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists (SGO) and the International Gynecological Cancer Society (IGCS), as well as Past President of the European Society of Gynecologic Oncology ( ESGO) and was Chair of the first ESMO-ESGO-ESTRO Consensus Conference in endometrial cancer (2015) and the first ESMO-ESGO Consensus Conference in ovarian Cancer (2018). Since 2016 she is Subject Editor of the ESMO Clinical Guidelines for Gynecological Malignancies.
